Week 8 Football Squares

Hey there once again, campers.
You know, I've spent almost my entire life as a sports fan secure in this one absolute, immutable truth: the Cleveland Browns are terrible and probably cursed. I mean, it really felt like every football season was the start of a countdown to the Browns receiving the #1 overall pick in the next NFL Draft. But lately, much to my surprise, the Browns have shown signs of possibly, just maybe, having the beginning of a good team, and I don't know how to deal with that. I don't know if I'm prepared to live in a world where the Browns are neither bad nor cursed. And if they win this weekend - yes, of course that's our NFL game this week - I really don't know how I'm going to handle the Cleveland Browns being tied for first place in their division. It really might just be a brave new world.
Notre Dame vs. BYU, Saturday, 10/17, 4:30pm PT / 7:30pm ET, ABC
The sleepy mountain town of Provo, Utah has never once hosted a college football matchup between two top-10 teams. Never, that is, until Saturday, when undefeated Notre Dame comes to town to face undefeated BYU in a game that will have a lot to say about who goes to the College Football Playoff and who might wind up watching from their couch for the second year in a row. Just how big is this game? ESPN's College Gameday traveling road-show is in town for the first time in almost 20 years, and students have been pitching tents all day to get a spot behind the set for Saturday morning. Expect a heavy defensive battle here; neither team is giving up so much as 14 points a game this year. I don't think we'll see a ton of scoring, but I am expecting a heck of a football game.
Baltimore vs. Cleveland, Sunday, 10/18, 10:00am PT / 1:00pm ET, Fox
When Todd Monken left his job running the Ravens' offense to become Cleveland's head coach this winter, Lamar Jackson texted to congratulate him. Monken wrote back with a word I can't print in a family email, followed by "We are going to blitz you every third down." Lamar laughed. Now the day is finally here and Monken's plan to blitz on every third down is ready to go, but the only thing missing is Lamar Jackson, whose sprained ankle has him ruled out for the second straight week. Instead it's Tyler Huntley, who tied the game in Atlanta last Sunday night in the final minute and then won it himself on a quarterback sneak in overtime. A Cleveland win pulls the Browns even with Baltimore atop the standings, and Monken's plan doesn't change. It just has a new name on it.
That'll do it for me, folks. By the way, there's a whole bunch of other really interesting games on the college football schedule on Saturday, including Indiana - Ohio State and Kentucky - Oklahoma. So enjoy a weekend full of football, and I'll be back next week with more squares.
